The Sacrament of Baptism

Celebrated the Fourth Sunday of the Month
Baptism is birth into new life in Christ. The essential Rite of Baptism consists of immersing the candidate in Holy Water (water consecrated by a priest) or pouring Holy Water on the head, with the words "I baptize you in the name of the Father, and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. Amen."

The grace of Baptism includes birth to new life as an adopted son or daughter of God and the forgiveness of original sin and all personal sin. The baptized person becomes part of the Body of Christ, the Church community. Baptism can be received only once since the sacrament imparts on the soul an indelible spiritual sign which dedicates the baptized person for Christian worship. Since the earliest times, Baptism has been administered to children for it is a gift of God that does not require human merit. See U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops, Sections 1278, 1279, 1280, 1282. Baptism is one of the three sacraments of the Rite of Christian Initiation that define our Christianity.

Our Lady of Malibu welcomes children and adults to baptism. For a child to be baptized in the Catholic Church there must be a basis of hope that the child will be raised in the Catholic faith, which generally means that at least one parent is Catholic. Each child to be baptized must also have at least one godparent who is a confirmed, practicing Catholic over the age of sixteen.

For adults wishing to be baptized, Our Lady of Malibu asks that baptism be part of becoming Catholic, the Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults, a two year process of learning and living the Catholic faith.

How To

have your child baptized ...

Please register your child(ren) at least two months in advance with the appropriate parish office. The Parish asks parents to participate in a Baptism Parent Preparation session prior to their child's baptism. This session is designed to help parents reflect spiritually on being new parents and how this change has affected their relationship with God. Reflection will also include the parents' thoughts on the faith they desire for their child. The theology of the sacrament and practical aspects of the ceremony will also be discussed.
